Read-and-respond exercise

Due: At the start of class Monday, Jan. 24

Please read the article "Computing Machinery and Intelligence" by Alan Turing (pages 153 - 167 in the anthology).

Write a short description of the "Turing Test" (distinguishing it from "The Imitation Game"), including in your analysis responses to the following questions:

What is Turing's thesis? What is the point he is trying to make?
What evidence does he bring in support of this thesis?
In what way can this paper be seen as a response to Descartes?

Review carefully Turing's comments on universal computers. We will look at those further on.

There are lots of other questions that could be asked (some of which may appear on our exams), but this will get us started in discussion Monday..
