Read-and-respond exercise
Due: At the start of class Wednesday, Sept. 13
Please read the article "Computing Machinery and Intelligence" by
Alan Turing (in the coursepack).
Write a short description of the paper, including your analysis of
the following questions:
- What is Turing's thesis? What is the point he is
trying to make?
- What evidence does he bring in support of this thesis?
- What (in Turing's view) is universal about a digital
computer?
- In what way can this paper be seen as a response to
Descartes?
There are lots of other questions that could be asked (some of
which may appear on our exams), but this will get us started in
discussion Wednesday.
