Math 300Third Hour Exam Review
Disclaimer: I have attempted to be comprehensive in the
following, but important items may have been omitted by mistake. If
you see such an omission, please let me know, but you are responsible
for all of the lecture material to date.
The second hour exam for Math 300 will be held on Friday,
April 27, and will cover Chapter 4 through the Metamathematical Theorem in
Chapter 7.
I will provide the axioms, some definitions, and some selected propositions presented so far, but you are responsible for the rest.
- Definitions for most of the terms defined in the textbook will be
provided on the exam handout. You should, however, be familiar with
them. Please be familiar with all definitions: not all of them
are on the exam handout.
- Proofs
- Be able to construct proofs for fairly straightforward
statements. Questions of this sort may be parts of proofs discussed in
class, homework problems (including those presented in class), and
problems derived from those proofs and problems. Be able to justify the steps
in a proof. A review of homework problems would be a good
review for this part. You should be comfortable with the proofs
given in class.
- For this exam, and the final exam, the strict
statement/justification form of a proof is relaxed to the sorts of
proofs we have been doing.
- Be prepared for a brief (5 pts.) historical question such as that
which appeared on earlier hour exam. In particular, we have
discussed:
- There will be a longer essay question (or two).
- A straight edge and compass will not be required for this exam,
but will be required for the final exam. I may, however, ask you about
Bolyai's construction of limiting parallel rays.
Please let me know if there are any questions. Many thanks!
