Math 300Second Hour Exam Review
Disclaimer: I have attempted to be comprehensive in the
following, but important items may have been omitted by mistake. If
you see such an omission, please let me know, but you are responsible
for all of the lecture material to date.
The second hour exam for Math 300 will be held on Friday,
March 23, and will cover Chapter 3 through the Exterior Angle Theorem in Chapter
4. I will provide the axioms, some definitions, and some selected propositions presented so far, but you are responsible for the rest.
- Definitions for most of the terms defined in the textbook will be
provided on the exam handout. You should, however, be familiar with
them. Please be familiar with all definitions: not all of them
are on the exam handout.
- Proofs
- Be able to construct proofs for fairly straightforward
statements (i.e., there are some of the homework problems that
I will not give you on an exam). Be able to justify the steps
in a proof. A review of homework problems would be a good
review for this part. You should be comfortable with the proofs
given in class.
- Be prepared for a brief (5 pts.) historical question such as that
which appeared on the first hour exam. In particular, we have
discussed the development of axiomatic systems with the work of
Moritz
Pasch and
David
Hilbert. Why are these additional axioms necessary? Who was
Richard Dedekind, and why is his axiom necessary? And what is a
Dedekind cut?
- There will be a question or two (or ??) on more philosophical issues
(why are we doing things this way, for example).
- A straight edge and compass will not be required for this exam,
but will be required for all following exams.
Please let me know if there are any questions. Many thanks!
