Honors 213 / Math 300Second Hour Exam Review
Disclaimer: I have attempted to be comprehensive in the
following, but important items may have been omitted by mistake. If
you see such an omission, please let me know, but you are responsible
for all of the lecture material to date.
The second hour exam for Honors 213 / Math 300 will be held on Monday,
March 6, and will cover chapters 2 and 3 (beginning with incidence
geometry and running through the material on betweenness). I will
provide a sheet with postulates, axioms, and logic rules (but not
definitions).
- Definitions:
- Be able to define the terms that appear in chapters 2 and 3
(formal definitions). In particular, be able to provide the
definitions of affine and projective geometries that appear in
chapter 2.
- Be able to define the terms that we have encountered so far
in Chapter 3 (through the axioms of betweenness)
- Models and interpretations
- Be able to explain what interpretations and
models are, and evaluate models.
- Be able to say what an isomorphism of models is.
- Be able to say why models are important.
- Proofs
- Be able to construct proofs for fairly straightforward
statements (i.e., there are some of the homework problems that
I will not give you on an exam). Be able to justify the steps
in a proof. A review of homework problems would be a good
review for this part.
- Philosophical musings
- Much of what we have been doing may appear to be stating
the obvious, or even being picky. Why should we take such care
with things? Be prepared for an essay question along these
lines.
- What on Earth did Hilbert have in mind with his comment on beer
mugs, tables and chairs?
- Be prepared for a brief (5 pts.) historical question such as that
which appeared on the first hour exam.
Please let me know if there are any questions. Many thanks!
