Final Exam Review

Disclaimer: I have attempted to be comprehensive in the following, but important items may have been omitted by mistake. If you see such an omission, please let me know, but you are responsible for all of the lecture material to date.

The final exam for CSci 261 (meets 9:00 AM MTThF) is scheduled for 4:00 - 6:00 PM Monday, Dec. 13. It will be an in-class comprehensive exam.

To review for the final exam, consider all of the work done during the semester. In particular, you should review homework, previous exams, and the exam review documents for exams 1 - 4. In addition to the material specified on those exam reviews, you should be prepared for

• Material covered since the fourth hour exam
  • Material on sequential search, including frequency-driven ordering of items in the list to be searched.
  • Binary and interpolation search
  • Hashing
    • Definition of a hashing function
    • Bucket hashing in a file
    • Hashing using an array of pointers and buckets implemented as a linked list.
• Material of a summary nature, tying together topics throughout the course
• A little more on loop invariants, preconditions, postconditions, assertions, and the like.
• The advantages of heuristics and information about distributions in search.
