Introduction

This interdisciplinary project was funded by the Richard Bangs Collier research grant from the University of Puget Sound. This research would not have been possible without the support and guidance of my project advisers at Puget Sound: Professor Katherine Smith in History, who first introduced me to Augustine; Professor David Chiu in Computer Science, who taught my first Computer Science class; and Professor Brett Rogers in Classics, who gave me the confidence in Classical Languages I needed to complete this project.

How to Cite this Website

To cite the commentaries on the website, use the following format:

Lamar, Annie K. "Commentary on Confessions V.vi.16." From "A Network Graph of Texts from Plato to Augustine," on Becoming Augustine: A Network Graph of Texts from Plato to Augustine. Last updated August 10, 2017. . Accessed on .

How to Use this Website

Each node in the graph includes a limited citation of the quoted text. Full citations for primary texts, including original texts and translations, can be found under "Primary Texts & Translations." Whenever possible, I have included links for you to read these texts online. The "Scholarship" tab includes citations for any work that influenced my research process or that I quoted either in the graph commentary or in the timeline. There is also a section for further reading in this section. Information about my process in creating this website is below.

Creating the Network Graph

A network graph shows connections (edges) between nodes (vertices). Network graphs are used in a variety of fields, from Biology to Marketing to Classics, like the graph on this website. After I collected the texts and research I needed, I created this graph using Gephi, a network visualization tool, and exported it using a plug-in developed by the Oxford Internet Institute and JISC. You can read more about the plug-in here. Since it can be challenging to show chronology on a network graph, I have also included a timeline on this website. Much of the code needed to build the timeline came from this open-source plugin.

Future Research & Contact Information

This graph aims to place Augustine in context with the authors that influenced him, focusing on Augustine’s ideas about original sin. It is my hope that as I continue my research, this graph will grow. If you have ideas or contributions for the website, please contact me.
